Minimum Computer Proficiency/Literacy Expectations
Learners entering into Union Institute & University's degree programs are expected to have basic working knowledge of computers including the following minimum skills:
- Perform basic functions within a Windows operating system, including regular updates
- Save to disks, find files, create folders, run programs on a Windows system.
- Copy and paste text and images.
- Create, edit, and save a document using word processing software.
- Install and uninstall programs.
- Upload and download software and files.
- A working knowledge of the World Wide Web and its functions including searching, navigating, and installing and upgrading a web browser.
- Use of e-mail and web-based communication tools.
- Proper "netiquette".
UI&U Computer/tech requirements
Below are some computer system recommendations to be able to complete your program with UI&U.
Desired PC Recommendations:
Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon XP 1400 (minimum - K7 800 mhz)
256 megabytes of RAM (minimum – 128)
20 gigabyte or greater hard drive (minimum space – 10 gigabyte)
CD/RW (writable CD-ROM)
Speakers or headphones
Windows XP Home Edition
Microsoft Office 20003 Professional or Student version (minimum – Office XP Suite)
Anti-virus software
Cable, DSL, or satellite high-speed Internet connection
Mac users are expected to meet these requirements with the OS X (10.1 or newer) system and compatible software, preferably Office for Mac 2004.
Discounted Purchase Programs
Both Apple and Dell offer discounted computers to those who provide proof of academic status for learners, faculty and staff. Check the company web sites for more information.

If learners do not meet these skills and technology requirements at the time of acceptance into their program, they understand that it is their personal responsibility to meet them within a few weeks of acceptance.
