Union Institute & University has a long-standing commitment to the concern for and protection of learners’ rights and privacy of information. Union Institute & University complies with the provisions of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, as amended:
Release of information—“Directory Information” may be released for any purpose at the discretion of the institution. Under the provisions of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, as amended, learners have the right to withhold the disclosure of all “Directory Information” as follows: name, address, telephone number, dates of attendance, college, class, major field of study, enrollment status, previous institution(s) attended, major field of study, awards, honors, and degree(s) conferred (including dates).
If a learner does not wish to have this information released for any purpose, including the learner directory, press releases, etc., the learner must inform the Registrar's Office in writing. If the learner's correspondence is not received in the Registrar's Office at the time of registration, the above information will be disclosed by the institution for the remainder of the academic term. Learners should consider very carefully the consequences of any decision by them to withhold all “Directory Information.” Should the learner decide to inform the institution not to release “Directory Information,” any future requests for such information from non‑institutional persons or organizations will be refused.
Right to review records—Once enrolled, learners have the right to review their educational records except those excluded by the law (e.g., records maintained by a physician or psychiatrist, parents' financial statement, etc.). Learners should contact the Registrar's Office to review their records. (They can also access them through CampusWeb).
It is the policy of this institution that the kinds of student records referred to in this statement will be reviewable by any qualified student at any reasonable time (not to exceed 45 days from receipt of written request). Copies of any portion of the record will be provided at a cost of 10 cents per page, except transcripts of the Permanent Academic Record, for which the university's transcript policy will apply.
Disclosure of education records—All student records will be treated with confidentiality. University faculty and staff will have access to student records on a “need to know” basis. The office responsible for any particular student record will be responsible for ensuring that such confidentiality is maintained. Please note that Union Institute & University will disclose information from a student’s record to officials of another school/institution in which a student seeks to enroll or attend on request from the school/institution.
Learners have the right to file with the U.S. Department of Education a complaint concerning alleged failures by Union Institute & University to comply with the requirements of FERPA. Written complaints should be directed to The Family Policy Compliance Office, U.S. Department of Education, 600 Independence Ave., SW, Washington, DC 20202-4605.
