Lifelong Learning

Independent Study:

With the guidance of an experienced Union Institute & University faculty mentor, learners have the option of custom designing an Independent Study for undergraduate or graduate academic credit.  Throughout the study, learners enjoy one-to-one interaction with their faculty mentor.  Independent studies are a great way to earn credit to satisfy prerequisite knowledge or degree requirements in an undergraduate or graduate program, to transfer to another institution or for professional development or continuing education to extend competencies.

Process & Forms

1)  The learner completes, signs and submits an Independent Study Plan to Lifelong Learning.  Lifelong Learning will then attempt to find an appropriate UI&U instructor.  The instructor will work with the learner to finalize the plan.  Both will then sign the Independent Study Plan.

2)  The learner must complete and submit a UI&U Enrollment Form to Lifelong Learning.

All forms & payment are submitted to Union Institute & University, Lifelong Learning, Brattleboro Academic Center, 3 University Way, Suite 3, Brattleboro, VT 05301. When all forms have been received, Lifelong Learning will shepherd the proposal through the university approval process, which includes a review by the director of Lifelong Learning and appropriate academic director or dean. Lifelong Learning will notify both learner and faculty by email when the study has been approved. At that time, the enrollment and learning process for the study may begin. For further information, please see this sample of our Lifelong Learning independent study process.
